The joy and pride doubled in me on receiving the print copy of the anthology “Paws Healing the Earth”.The anthology was released on March 29, 2021, by the River Paw Press. I’m immensely thankful to editor Kalpna Singh Chitnis, a brilliant poet, writer, and filmmaker, who brought this anthology to fruition through her timeless efforts. An anthology that is an ode to the animals surrounding us healing us through their acts and guiding us in our lives through their actions. We have heard innumerable stories when an affectionate pet has been the source of healing, compassion, and inspiration, so to dedicate this anthology to all the pets and other animals in our life was long-awaited.

This anthology features 76 poems of 44 poets spread across the pages with a heartwarming cover page by Mona El Falaky mirroring the effect of the soft impression of the paws healing the earth. The anthology has been an ode to Kalpna’s Lhasa Apso, Troy, a dog rescued from the Orange County Shelter,  that comes to her life as a blessing. Kalpna warmly recounts the journey of Troy and his impression on her life and his meditative way of living through life. I can strongly relate to many emotions mentioned in the forward and as I was a dog owner of my precious Black Labrador, Bruno for many years before he left for his heavenly abode.

The foreword in the book has aroused so many emotions in me and it speaks strongly to me. The quote mentioned in the book resonates strongly with me when it says that “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”  –Anatole France.

The book features brilliant poets from Kedarnath Singh, Abhay K, Melissa Studdard’s, Joshua Corwin, and Pulitzer Prize Winner, Robert Pinsky, Zilka Joseph, Lois P Jones, Shanta Acharya, Kalpna Singh Chitnis, Jenifer Carr, Candie Louisa Daquin, and many more.

It is indeed true that animals are part of our collective consciousness and are essential for our survival and well-being. The poems spread across the pages of this anthology are a pure testament to that emotion.
