Question

“The only real conflict you will ever have in your life won’t be with others, but with yourself.”

Everyone,
everyone around me has the same prying eyes
the same question,
looming over their heads
for the eternal time

They are always in awe of me
how I have kept the held high
broken and crumbled
after the heartbreak
but still soaring in the sky

They treat me a benchmark
as an epitome for
dealing with the heartbreak
show them to their daughters
how to handle
this godforsaken thing

They keep worshipping me like a deity
how well I have
managed the pain
how gracefully I walk with
blisters on the feet,
but never ever once
complained about the pain

They see me as their savior
who will pull them from the ashes
and teach them
to rise like a phoenix
the way it is to be

The one question which they  have
hovering on their mind
is how I got over him
what, I did was so sublime?

I purse my lips
with a hand to my heart
swear them, to tell the truth
how it kept me
floating on the top

They ask ” How did you manage to move on?”
How I got over you?
I smile and say,
“I’ll tell you when I do”.

  1. Well said! While we sometimes display an image of “I’m okay” for others to see, our inner souls may be raw and wounded. Your poem reminds me of past wounds, which have faithfully healed. Some of the scars remain.
