Tea leaves

They say you can find

your destiny in the tea leaves

sticking at the bottom of the cup

encircling and leaving patterns

easy to deciphered and

encoded

making the patterns

that zig-zag mesh

resembling the events in your life

Marking your ups and downs

and earmarking

all the important events

which make them truly shine

It’s an art they say

pure talent

so sublime

I wonder

I gaze with a child-like

wonder

my mouth agape in

excitement

and horror at the same time

How mere broken leaves

from a plant forgotten,

can seamlessly

narrate my story

when you so conveniently

ignore the scars the

time has left on me.

  1. Love the juxtaposition in the twist at the end: wonderment and fear, all at once. How simple those tea leaves can spin our stories while the ones we truly want to understand do not. Beautiful, Megha!

      1. Oh yes! Believe me the Potterhead inside me was rejoicing at that realisation. I specially love the ending though, with how you have given a fresh twist to the old lore of fortune telling by tea leaves 🙂
