Cocoon

“and when all the wars are over, a butterfly will still be beautiful.”

Break the cocoon and crack the shell
come out of it alive and refreshed
you need a transformation
you need an inevitable change
you need to come out of the chrysalis
so you can be colorful again

Break the cocoon and crack the shell
the claustrophobia is setting in
and you need to shift
to make some space
you don’t want to be shoved into a corner
or cordoned off in a pen
you need your emotions to be alive
you need your feelings to take flight

Break the cocoon and crack the shell
the tightness in your chest
your labored breathing
will stop your heart someday
you need to stretch your limitations
and broaden your horizons again

Break the cocoon and crack the shell
the misogyny, the patriarchy
the archaic rules
can’t keep you down anymore
you need to give some breathing space
to the zealous life, you have been breathing for

Break the cocoon and crack the shell
scratch it hard don’t stop
don’t look at the broken nails
clutch and scrape your way out
so you can breathe easily
in the fresh air again.

The needles in your back
will soon turn into wings
cuts and bruises will give
way to the new shapes
burst forth and fly away
into the endless sky,
you will soar again.

Break the cocoon
Crack the shell.

  1. Oh, wow, this is sooooo good. Love everything about it from the sentiment of breaking the cocoon and the shell to the repetition of said line. It’s amazing how humans are capable of doing this as many times as necessary – we can always cocoon then be reborn in some way, shape or form. And bravo for the anti-archaic lines – time for all to be treated as we were meant to be, equal in all aspects. Great writing, Megha!
